2016 has been a crazy year, to say the least. There were a lot of social, political, and environmental events that shook and shocked the world.
While this list is in no way exhaustive of all the events, victories, and tragedies that we saw in 2016, TIME Magazine shares their top 10 photos of 2016 to give us a glimpse of some of the notable things that happened this past year. Here are the photos that made it to their list.
1. Ieshia Evans’ Arrest in the Baton Rouge Protests
On July 9, 2016, a group of protesters gathered to protest the fatal shooting of Alton Sterling by Baton Rouge police officers. 28-year-old nurse Ieshia Evans is one of the protesters and was captured in this widely shared photo standing her ground, showing courage and strength to stand up for what she believed in.
2. Turkey’s Coup Attempt
On July 15, a faction of the Turkish army blocked the Bosphorus Bridge in Istanbul as part of a failed attempt to topple the government of Recep Tayyip Erdogan. In the early hours of the following day, the soldiers surrendered on the same bridge they occupied. The photo got worldwide attention as a symbol of the people rising up against an army.
3. Syrian Despair
The heartbreaking photo shows a young boy crying beside the corpse of a relative whose death was caused by an airstrike in one of the rebel-held neighborhoods in Aleppo. According to the photographer,
“He had lost a large number of his relatives. His father was killed not long ago as well. He was crying next to his brother’s body as some aid workers surrounded him trying to calm him down and console him. On that day that boy lost his mother too.”
4. A Daughter’s Anguish – Jimboy’s Funeral
6-year-old Jimji is photographed crying out “Papa, papa” as her father’s body is moved for burial. Her father, 25-year-old Jimboy Bolasa is one of the casualties in Philippine president Rodrigo Duterte’s violent and brutal war on drugs that has claimed over 6,000 lives.
5. Air Force One Lands in Cuba
On March 20, US President Barack Obama and his family flew to Cuba, marking a historic event of improving US-Cuba relations after decades of animosity.
6. Migrants Awaiting Rescue at the Mediterranean Sea
On October 4, 2016, photographer Aris Messinis was with Proactiva Open Arms, a Spanish rescue team trying to rescue 3,000 refugees. According to Aris,
“When we approached this boat, which had 220 people packed on board, they were all screaming for help. They told us that there were many dead people in the boat. Among the survivors, some had babies and they were holding them up so they would be rescued. One of these babies is in this picture.”
7. Refugees In Line for Food Ration
The photo shows a group of refugees in rain gear waiting in line for their ration of hot tea in the Greece-Macedonia border on March 12, 2016.
8. Donald Trump Speaking to a Crowd of Supporters
Then presidential candidate Donald Trump speaks to the overflow crowd that wasn’t able to get into the main venue to hear his speech during a campaign rally in Greenville, North Carolina.
9. Usain Bolt, the World’s Fastest Man
